Shipping and Receiving Radioactive Material
Contact: Dave Bertocchi, dab40@psu.edu814-865-6391
In order to ensure the health and safety of the general public as well as ensure compliance with applicable federal regulations, Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) only allows properly trained personnel to ship and receive radioactive material.
- Training
EHS provides specialized training to Penn State personnel who need to transport or ship radioactive material on a routine basis. An example of this would be training for people who need to transport moisture/density gauges or routinely ship limited quantities of radioactive material to off campus locations.
- Shipping of Radioactive Material
If you need to ship radioactive material to another institution or another Penn State researcher please contact EHS in advanced so that the necessary approvals can be obtained. The following information will be needed prior to EHS starting to prepare the shipment.
- Your name and your authorized supervisor’s name,
- Your address, phone number, and e-mail address,
- The recipients name, address, phone number, e-mail address, and institution name,
- The budget number to which the shipping costs should be charged.
Note: Radioactive may be WALKED between authorized rad labs as long as the total activity is less than 50 microcuries.
- Receiving of Radioactive Material
All licensed radioactive material for PSU must be shipped directly to:
- Environmental Health and Safety
- ATTN: Authorized Supervisor’s Name
- 228 Academic Projects Building
- University Park, PA 16802
With prior approval, exceptions will be granted for exceptionally large objects and material being used at sites outside of University Park. If radioactive material is delivered directly to your laboratory, DO NOT OPEN THE PACKAGE; contact EHS immediately.
Radioactive material may only be ordered by authorized users under approved purchase orders. Credit card purchases are not allowed. The authorized user my order rad material under an approved standing purchase order or a one time purchases order. Each purchase order must have a completed yellow Purchase Order Clearance for Radioactive Material form attached.
