Vacation Fire Safety

Before Leaving Home

  • Make sure all stoves and electrical appliances are turned off or disconnected.
  • Televisions, radios and computers should be unplugged to prevent fires from electrical surges or lightning strikes.

Hotels / Motels and other residences

  • Insure smoke detectors are installed and operational.
  • If possible stay at locations that are also protected by automatic fire sprinkler systems.
  • Check and locate exits from the room you are staying in.
  • Read fire safety information that is provided in your room.

Camping

  • Keep open flame devices away from tents and other combustible materials.
  • Use caution and follow manufactures recommendations when using and refueling lanterns, cooking stoves etc.
  • Keep areas clear of combustible materials around campfire sites.
  • Never leave campfires or other open flame devices unattended.
  • If using a motorhome or trailer make sure there is an operational smoke detector and CO detector installed.

General

  • Know the emergency phone numbers for locations where you are staying.
  • When returning home test smoke detectors to make sure they are still operational.
