Laboratory Fire

Recently, a fire occurred in a research lab on campus causing significant damage to equipment and furnishings and interrupting normal use of the lab. Fortunately, the fire was contained to one room.

The fire originated in a non-explosion proof refrigerator which was being used for storage of numerous samples, solutions, and chemicals.

The loss reiterates the importance of

  • knowing the hazards of the materials used (flammable, corrosive, etc.)
  • assuring proper equipment is utilized
  • following appropriate storage practices
  • maintaining low quantities of flammable liquids in laboratories
There was potential for a greater loss, however building occupants acted appropriately by immediately activating the emergency response system and the building fire alarm system, and evacuating the building.
