Suspicious Mail and Packages Procedures

Mail and packages can be used to deliver suspicious and potentially hazardous materials. Before opening, take care to examine items for anything unusual.

Examples of issues that might raise concern are:

  1. Oily stains or discolorations
  2. Excessive tape or string
  3. Strange odor
  4. Misspelled words
  5. Lopsided or uneven package
  6. Excess postage
  7. No return address

If a package seems unusual:

  1. Handle with care. Do not shake or bump.
  2. Don't open, smell, touch or taste.
  3. Isolate it immediately.
  4. Treat as suspect and contact University Police.
