Mail Handling Procedures

The recent discovery of ricin in a U.S. Senate Office building mailroom illustrates the need for continued vigilance in the handling of suspicious letters and packages. While there is no evidence, specific or anecdotal, to suggest this is anything more than an isolated incident, we are sending this reminder about mail handling procedures.

Continue to follow procedures for handling suspicious mail and packages by following these guidelines:

  1. Handle with care; do not shake or bump.
  2. Isolate it immediately.
  3. Do not open, smell, touch or taste.
  4. Treat it as suspect. Call the law enforcement agency that provides service to your campus.

Posters containing these guidelines can be downloaded from either of the following web sites:

These may be printed and posted in mailrooms or other appropriate locations.

We are asking Human Resource Representatives and University Safety Council representatives to work together to ensure distribution of this information throughout your areas.
