Lion Surplus

Penn State University, under the direction of the Office of Business Services, established an operational unit referred to as "Lion Surplus" many years ago to manage the disposal of unneeded furniture, office materials, vehicles and equipment. Even before it became generally recognized as "recycling," Penn State was utilizing this operation to provide the local community with a mechanism to beneficially reuse surplus University materials that would otherwise be handled as waste. The alternative would have been to dispose of this still usable material in the local landfill.

In an effort to reduce the disposal of materials deemed hazardous, but which are used by the general public, such as paints, contact cements, etc., EHS has implemented a program whereby hazardous, but unused, general use materials are generally approved for sale. Other materials that have potential environmental, health or safety hazards associated with their use are prohibited from being sold. Ongoing education of Lion Surplus employees and overview of materials received provides continuing oversight of products offered for sale.

For additional information please contact EHS or review the Lion Surplus Guidelines.
