Emergency Procedures
Call 911 for any Life-Threatening Emergency
- Fires
- Explosions
- Serious Injuries
- Any other incident which poses an immediate threat to life or the environment
If you have a chemical, biological, or radiological incident that does not pose a life-threatening emergency:
- Call (814) 865-6391 Monday - Friday, 8 AM - 5 PM, on holidays or (814) 863-1111 (University Police) all other times. After hours, University Police will notify the appropriate EHS staff member to provide assistance.
- If this involves the spill of a small quantity of a chemical, biological, or radioactive material you are familiar with, and you have been trained in proper clean-up procedures, follow those instructions.
- The following data sheets provide additional information for specific types of spills, releases, exposures, or injuries and appropriate recovery and reporting requirements.

For emergency situations involving hazardous materials at Penn State and throughout Centre County, the Penn State University certified Hazmat Team may be contacted to provide assistance. PEMA Act 165 mandates each county in Pennsylvania have a PEMA-certified HazMat Response Team available to respond to hazardous materials; the Penn State HazMat Team is the certified team for Centre County.
This team is composed of twenty-one members and is capable of safely and properly cleaning up spills and releases of extremely toxic materials.
